Week 9- Paper 3 Topics

 When thinking about my next paper, I keep going back and forth between two really important topics in Hawaii: fossil fuels and the housing crisis. Both issues deeply affect residents everyday lives, and both connect to questions of sustainability, health, and the future of our islands. Fossil fuels are essential to Hawaii's energy system, but they also pollute the air, harm the health of our communities, and contribute to climate change. On the other hand, the housing crisis highlights the social and economic struggles that make it hard for local families to reside in their island they grew up in and call home, with limited affordable housing, rising rents, and gentrification changing the face of our neighborhoods.


I'm drawn to these topics because they feel both urgent and relevant. Writing about fossil fuels would let me explain how Hawaii's relevance on imported oil and gas impacts the environment and public health, while also considering renewable alternatives. Writing about the housing crisis would allow me to dig into how policy, economics, and development shape community life and the future of its residents. Either way, the paper would give ,e the chance to connect real issues in Hawaii to broader themes of sustainability, survival, and justice, making the research not just and academic exercise but also something that matters to me personally

Week 1- Community

As a mixed race local girl born and raised in Hawaii with no Hawaiian blood circulating my veins, I've always been slightly confused about who, what, and where community is. As a child I felt very close to family, teachers and friends but never realized that right there was my community. According to Google, the noun Community is a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. Though, I've recently been feeling like Community isn't about proximity, similarities, or even who's in your immediate family but actually who you feel comfortable with or supported by. Granted, your community won't always be conveying the feeling of comfortability. Growth comes from vulnerability and reflection which are often the very opposite of comfortable. Week 5- Paper 2 100 Word Challenge

Skill development is the most important value in any community because it gives people the knowledge the need to grow and survive. Learning skills like fishing, farming, or making art helps people become more independent and it keeps tradition alive. Vaughan highlights how communities thrive by preserving knowledge and skills. While emotional support and food are vital to our well-being, they both rely on people having the ability to provide and share. Skill development acts as the foundation for the other values. Without skill development, food systems, mutual aid, and knowledge preservation weaken. It makes communities sustainable, builds confidence, connects past knowledge to future challenges, and empowers individuals to contribute meaningfully.

Week 3- Mo’olelo Minamina

While reading Mo’olelo Minamina, I was surprised  with the dramatic shift from abundance to waste. Earlier, fishing brought the community together where people said " Lawa, enough for everybody". But in the end, Uncle Ah Meng is alone, burying fish that could not be eaten. This contrast shows how changes in environment affect the heart of the community
